Ownership of Learning
At Arise, students take ownership of their learning journey. This means setting personal goals, tracking progress, and taking initiative in their education. By owning their learning, students develop independence, accountability, and a sense of purpose in their education. Motivation and effort are key to success here; students who actively engage in their learning, persevere through challenges, and put forth their best effort will see personal growth and academic achievement.
Self-Paced Learning
Every student progresses at their own pace, meaning they move forward when they are truly ready, not based on age or grade level. This allows students to master each concept before moving on, which fosters deep understanding and lasting confidence. However, it’s important to understand that self-paced learning does not mean choosing to work slowly or avoid challenges. It means that students are given the time they need to truly grasp concepts, but they must also put in the effort to maintain steady progress, aiming to reach their full potential without unnecessary delays. Self-paced learning empowers students to take control of their educational journey while pushing themselves to reach their highest potential.
Mastery-Based Approach
At Arise, we don’t settle for “just getting by.” Students must demonstrate true mastery of a subject before moving on. This approach ensures they gain a deep understanding, which builds confidence and creates a strong academic foundation. Students who engage fully in the process of mastering each concept will leave with a lasting and comprehensive understanding of what they’ve learned.
Engagement in Real-World Projects
Thriving at Arise means engaging in projects that apply learning to real-world scenarios. These projects are not just assignments—they are opportunities to develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity. Students must approach each project with a growth mindset, tackling challenges with resilience, curiosity, and an open mind. The process of engaging in these projects fosters not just academic growth, but also the development of a strong work ethic and an ability to work through difficulties with determination and an optimistic attitude.
Life Skills Development
Life skills are woven into daily activities at Arise and are a critical part of our afternoon curriculum. These skills include critical thinking, personal development, grit, leadership, and more. Some skills are even completed at home, reinforcing the importance of responsibility beyond the classroom. It’s essential that parents take these At Home Skills seriously, as we rely on them to help ensure that their child has mastered these key skills. Mastering life skills is just as important as academics, as they build resilience, character, and the ability to navigate the challenges of life.
While we believe our approach works for most students, it is important to note that the learner-driven, self-paced, and mastery-based model may not be the best fit for every student. If a student consistently struggles to engage with the learning environment, requires excessive redirection, or does not make progress despite interventions, they may not thrive in this setting. Additionally, students who are unwilling to take ownership of their learning, frequently require supervision, or fail to demonstrate growth may not find success at Arise. It is important that both students and parents understand that our approach requires active participation, self-motivation, and the ability to move forward at a personalized pace.
At Arise, we are committed to helping students grow, not only academically, but in character and life. We work together to ensure that every Trailblazer’s journey is purposeful, personal, and filled with growth. However, if we feel that the approach is not benefiting a student or meeting their needs, we will discuss whether this environment is the right place for them to succeed.
We are excited to partner with you to help your child thrive in knowledge, character, and purpose.
