3rd - 12th Grade Curriculum

Older Trailblazers (3-12th) utilize online platforms and adaptive game based programs for core skills. Students will be given opportunities to supplement their education with a variety of online mediums while also increasing their writing skills in various styles through our writing centers. Expeditions will be the area where it all comes together and they can dive deep into a rigorous project that will encompass 5-6 weeks of learning in a group setting.

  • Grammar/Writing: Mastering written communication is crucial, and honing writing skills requires regular practice, so we engage in extensive writing activities. For grammar, we utilize online platforms and technologically advanced software. We employ group editing sessions to develop peer review skills. While writing remains our primary focus, Trailblazers also explore various forms of communication, including film, photography, public speaking, sales pitch, and many other mediums.

  • Reading: Our aim is to cultivate a passion for reading. Instead of assigning specific books or materials, we encourage our Trailblazers to begin with any reading material they find enjoyable, including comic books. Gradually, as their interest grows, they are drawn to more complex literature, provided the topic intrigues them.

  • Math: We use a variety of adaptive programs, gamification and other online mediums to deliver math skills.

  • Civilization: Civilization covers history, geography, and economics, progressing over four years from ancient times to the present day. Trailblazers will frequently step into the roles of historical figures, engaging in debates and making tough decisions. Often, pivotal issues from the studied era will become part of an Expedition, such as our American Declaration of Independence and US Constitution challenges, where Trailblazers assume the roles of Founding Fathers, confronting challenging decisions with real-world impacts.

  • PE and Art: PE and Art will be once a week (on Fridays) as well as interspersed throughout Expeditions.

  • Personal Passion Exploration:  PPE are online based educational activities or projects – with occasional guidance from outside experts and volunteers when available – that allow learners to delve into subjects or areas of interest deeply personal to them, beyond the standard curriculum. This approach is built on the premise that when students engage with topics they are genuinely passionate about, their motivation, engagement, and retention of information improve significantly. Examples of PPE.

  • Expeditions: Expeditions are 5-6 week long individual or group based projects completed in the afternoon session Monday – Thursday. They represent practical projects in the real world where young participants utilize their problem-solving and project management abilities to explore. Upon completing each expedition, these young individuals will present their experiences and progress with through an End of Block Exhibition. Check our our Expeditions and Exhibitions page to learn more.
